BALTIMORE — Brett Lawrie was a mess. After receiving a Gatorade bath, he took a shaving-cream pie to the face.
Before all that, Lawrie singled twice and drove in a run in his major-league debut to help Toronto beat Baltimore 5-4 Friday night.
The 21-year-old Lawrie, recalled from AAA Las Vegas on Thursday, hit a run-scoring single in his first at-bat and singled in the eighth inning, missing a chance for a second RBI when Colby Rasmus was thrown out at the plate.
The native of Langley, B.C., is the brother of Danielle Lawrie, a softball pitcher and two-time national player of the year for the University of Washington. His mother, father and sister were in the stands.
After the game, the ball from his first hit was securely nestled in Lawrie's locker, but he wasn't sure because he could barely see through the shaving cream.
"It might be somewhere," he said. "It might be. I'm still getting stuff out of my ears."
Lawrie batted .353 with 18 home runs and 61 runs batted in for Las Vegas. He is the 17th Canadian to play for the Jays.
